Photos with (small) birds

Several years ago a friend of mine had taken several b&w photos at a public garden for a photography workshop he was attending. One of them was of a pigeon on top of a lamp post, with several trees on the background. There was a garbage basket at the bottom of the post. He took the photo because of the pigeon, but he used a wide lens so the bird was hardly visible.

When the workshop coordinator looked at the photo he praised the striking contrast between the post with the garbage basket and the natural surroundings. "He didn't even notice the pigeon!" my friend complained to me.

What other people see on our photos is irremediably different from what we know is there.
