What makes this photo visually interesting? Correct! That darker diagonal line that divides the image and somehow introduces some order on the otherwise chaotic composition of randomly oriented small branches.
I always wonder if it is just the difference between monitors and calibration settings... Anyway, wouldn't a little bit of punch in the darks (or contrast) bring a more dramatic effect, or is it just the easy way to make this kind of photo work?
I color-calibrate my monitor at home with Pantone's Huey Pro. However, brightness/contrast have to be checked manually. I guess it's time to spend some time doing it properly.
