White flowers and dry branches

What makes this photo visually interesting? Correct! That darker diagonal line that divides the image and somehow introduces some order on the otherwise chaotic composition of randomly oriented small branches.

I always wonder if it is just the difference between monitors and calibration settings...
Anyway, wouldn't a little bit of punch in the darks (or contrast) bring a more dramatic effect, or is it just the easy way to make this kind of photo work?

I color-calibrate my monitor at home with Pantone's Huey Pro. However, brightness/contrast have to be checked manually. I guess it's time to spend some time doing it properly.
